Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, engineer and contractor, active in the 1760s and 1770s. In 1765 Hamilton Bury submitted plans for the Tholsel at Drogheda and was appointed to oversee the building of it.(1) He also did various other work for Drogheda Corporation.(2) Described by M.B. Mullins as an engineer who had been a contractor on the abortive Nore Navigation,(3) Bury gave evidence to the House of Commons in the early 1770s as to the possibility of executing DAVIS DUCART' DAVIS DUCART' s scheme for a subterranean canal to connect with the Newry Canal for the estimated cost of £26,900. Although he was of the opinion that the work could be carried out for that amount, the canal, which had already been started, was abandoned.(4) He may be the person of the same name who married Anne Stafford at St Andrew's Church, Dublin, on 2 February 1774.(5)
