Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Chicago, for whom see Macmillan Encyclopedia of Architects(1982), I, 361-2.(1) In Ireland Byrne designed the innovative Church of Christ the King, Turner's Cross, Cork (1927-1931), which was carried out under the supervision of BASIL BOYD BARRETT BASIL BOYD BARRETT . In her unpublished Ph.D. thesis on Byrne, Sally Chappell points out that he had expressed in various articles his objections to traditional, revivalist designs for churches on the grounds of cost, and suggests that it may have been his 'reputation for economy' as much as anything else which recommended him to the Bishop of Cork, Dr Daniel Cohalan.(2)

See WORKS, for Irish work only.
