AYLMER, GERALD GEORGE (SIR)
- Born: 1798 Died: 1878
Amateur architect and improving landlord, of Donadea Castle, Co. Kildare. Gerald George Aylmer, eldest son of Sir Fenton Aylmer of Donadea and his wife Jane Grace, daughter of Sir John Evans Freke of Castle Freke, Co. Cork, was born on 15 December 1798. According to Sherlock, his 'interests were entirely centred in his property; and he built the first stone cottages for labourers in his immediate district, and made part of the road from Prosperous to Donadea at his own expense, and also the first footpath in the neighbourhood. He had a great taste for building, and modernized, not too wisely much of the house at Donadea.'(1) He is also said to have designed a sixty-foot-high beacon tower on Hill of Allen (1859-1863).(2)
