Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer of Belfast, Dublin and Nigeria. Arthur Ulick Burke, who was born in Belfast on 25 September 1881, was educated at St Malachy's College and the Christian Brothers' Schools in Belfast. After completing his schooling in 1896, he spent a year in Nantes and then became a pupil of GEORGE FREDERICK LEE GILES GEORGE FREDERICK LEE GILES , the Belfast Harbour engineer. After three years as Giles's pupil and a further four years as his assistant, Burke was appointed to the engineering staff of Dublin Corporation in September 1905, working first on a survey of the site of the Roundwood reservoir and then on the Dublin main drainage. In 1911 he took up a post in Southern Nigeria; on the occasion of his departure he was presented by his colleagues with a silver chased revolver and a purse of sovereigns.(1)
