Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Cork. George Buckley was an apprentice of GEORGE RICHARD PAIN  GEORGE RICHARD PAIN in 1832 and until 1834.(1) In 1828 he exhibited a model of a Gothic church at the Mechanics' Institute Exhibition, Cork,(2), and in 1831 he won first prize for the best architectural drawing from the Cork Society for Promoting the Fine Arts.(3) The first prize and the second prize, which had been awarded to WILLIAM ATKINS WILLIAM ATKINS , were subsequently withheld by the Society's officers and a single prize awarded instead to to KEARNS DEANE. KEARNS DEANE. (4) Buckley's design - for a Gothic cathedral church with a college attached - was exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy the following year,(5) together with his model of the principal front of a palace.(6) He is referred to as 'young Buckley of Cork' in 1832,(7) and in an article in the Dublin Penny Journal of 15 February 1834 as the architect of the 'exquisitely beautiful' Gothic mansion 'recently erected' one mile south of Castle Bernard for William Smyth Bernard, M.P., brother of the Earl of Bandon.(8)
