'CE', of Rossleighan Park, Portlaoise, Co. Laois.  Joseph Bannan, who was born in Portlaoise in 187 or 1879, appears to have been the eldest surviving son of Tobias Bannon  - as his name is spelt in his 1901 census return -  carpenter and shopkeeper, of Market Square, Portlaoise, and his wife Marion.  In the same return Joseph P. Bannon is described as 'clerk of works'.  By the time of the 1911 census Joseph Bannan was living in Main Street, Porlaoise, with his wife Margaret and three children, his occupation now described as 'Civil Engineer'.  In 1927 he provided the designs for the reconstruction of the courthouses at Borris-in-Ossory, Co. Laois, and Mountmellick, Co. Laois, which had been damaged in the disturbances of 1919-23.  By this stage he had moved to Rossleighan Park, presumably an indication of a successful career.
