Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

French architect who designed the French pavilion at the Dublin International Exhibition of 1907.  Charles de Montarnal, who practised in Paris, was involved in no less than thirteen international exhibitions between 1895 and 1910. A report in the Irish Times praises the 'simple elegance' of the interior of the Dublin pavilion and the 'highly ornate and yet stately' appearance of the exterior.(1)

'Its central arched doorway and side wings are decorated ornately, but with refined taste; the plaster modelling and other details inviting, and bearing the closest examination.  the middle tower, with its revolving light, lends a dignified aspect to the facade, which is rendered still more conspicuous amidst its white surroundings by the cream colour of the walls.'
