Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

English-born gardener and landscape architect, for whom see Alan Grills, 'A famous Irish nursery: Daisy Hill Nurseries, Newry', Moorea: Journal of the Irish Garden Plant Society 10 (1993), 3-6.  Tom Smith came to Ireland in 1870 to work in the nursery of J.A. Daly in Newry, Co. Down.  In 1887 he set up his own nursery in Newry,which he named Daisy Hill Nuurseries and which was to become one of the leading nurseries in Ireland with a world-wide reputation amoung gardeners and connoisseurs of gardening.    Smith laid out many gardens and estates in Ireland  and Britain.

'Mr Smith has used wooden railway sleepers, placed on end, as a boundary wall all round:  these will be covered with laurels and other evergreens to form a hedge...In front of the stands all the trees have been cut down, so as to form an uninterrupted view of the surrounding country:  while in the paddock, behind the stands, rare shrubs and plants have been artistically grouped.'
