Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. George Coppinger Ashlin, third son(1) of John Musson Ashlin, J.P., of Rush Hill, Wandsworth, Surrey, by his wife Dorinda Coppinger,(2) was born at Carrigrenane House, Co. Cork, on 28 May 1837. His mother's family had been long established in Co. Cork. He was educated at the College of St. Servais, Liège, and, from 1851 to 1855, at Oscott College, near Birmingham, where he appears already to have started preparing for a career in architecture.(3) In 1856 he became a pupil of EDWARD WELBY PUGIN EDWARD WELBY PUGIN , first in Birmingham and then in London, and from 1858 until 1860 he was also a student at the Royal Academy. On completing his articles, he was taken into partnership by Pugin, who gave him the responsibility of establishing a Dublin branch of the practice and taking charge of the Irish commissions, which now included the large new church of SS Peter and Paul in Cork. By the beginning of 1861 he had opened the office of PUGIN & PUGIN & amp; ASHLIN  ASHLIN at 90 St Stephen's Green.(4) Many commissions followed, almost all of them for Catholic churches, convents and monasteries throughout the country, culminating in the new cathedral at Queenstown (Cobh), Co. Cork. The partnership of Pugin & Ashlin was dissolved in the latter months of 1868, but, as Ashlin had married Edward Pugin's younger sister Mary Pugin (1844-1933) in 1867, family ties remained close. Ashlin is said to have been in partnership with his brothers-in-law Peter Paul Pugin and Cuthbert Pugin from 1875 to circa 1880(5) but, if this is true, he worked under his own name in Ireland, where he continued to enjoy a highly successful practice. In 1903 he invited his former pupil and office manager, THOMAS ALOYSIUS COLEMAN  THOMAS ALOYSIUS COLEMAN to join him in the new partnership of ASHLIN & ASHLIN & amp; COLEMAN COLEMAN . Other pupils and assistants from the period before the establishment of the new partnership included Ashlin's nephew STEPHEN MARTIN ASHLIN STEPHEN MARTIN ASHLIN , who also became a partner,  the engineer HENRY NORMAN LEASK HENRY NORMAN LEASK , ALLAN MACDONALD ALLAN MACDONALD , ALFRED IGNATIUS MCGLOUGHLIN ALFRED IGNATIUS MCGLOUGHLIN , who supervised the Portrane Asylum project before emigrating to the United States circa 1900, HORACE TENNYSON O'ROURKE HORACE TENNYSON O'ROURKE , JOHN GABRIEL O'SULLIVAN JOHN GABRIEL O'SULLIVAN , PATRICK F. O'SULLIVAN PATRICK F. O'SULLIVAN , JAMES PURCELL WRENN  JAMES PURCELL WRENN and perhaps HERBERT AUGUSTINE KEATE GRIBBLE.  HERBERT AUGUSTINE KEATE GRIBBLE.

Although described as being 'of a quiet and retiring disposition … with a certain inherent shyness',(6) Ashlin played an active role in the affairs of the architectural profession in Ireland. As president of the RIAI from 1902 to 1904 he represented Irish architects on the RIBA's committee on registration, undertaking, as ALBERT EDWARD MURRAY ALBERT EDWARD MURRAY , pointed out, 'many journeys solely for that purpose and at his own expense, and doubtless to his own personal and professional inconvenience'.(7) He was a member of both the original and the revived AAI, to which he gave generous financial support.(8) He also belonged to the London Architectural Association and frequently joined its excursions, sketching and taking photographs. He acted as assessor in many competitions: St Peter's Catholic church, Drogheda, 1883;(9) Town Hall, Newry, Co. Down, 1890;(10) County Hall, Tralee, Co. Kerry, 1905;(11) Fever Hospital, Galway, 1907;(12) Castletownberehaven Catholic church, Co. Cork, 1907;(13) Tralee Technical School and Library, 1909;(14) remodelling and extension of the Munster & Leinster Bank, Cork, 1909;(15) Carnegie Library, Dun Laoghaire, 1910.(16)

ALFRED EDWIN JONES ALFRED EDWIN JONES , who became a pupil in Ashlin & Coleman's office in about 1911, remembered Ashlin as a tall, commanding figure with 'an appearance of distinction' and described his morning routine.(17) Each day he would catch a fast train from Killiney to Westland Row and walk from the station to his office at 7 Dawson Street. On reaching the office door he would hand his umbrella and attaché case to an awaiting junior member of staff and mount the horse which a man held ready at the kerb. He would then canter up Dawson Street to to Stephen's Green and ride several times round the park on the track which ran just inside the railings before returning to the office to start his day's work. According to his obituarist in the RIAI Journal, Ashlin 'continued in active energy until a short while before his death' and 'preserved his comparatively youthful bearing almost to the end of his active career'. He died, aged eighty-four, on 10 December 1921, at St George's, Killiney, the house which he had designed for himself, and was buried in the family plot in Glasnevin Cemetery.(18) He left personal property to the value of £9,943.10s. 8d. Apart from a bequest of £25 to the parish priest of Ballybrack 'for charitable purposes', his entire estate went to his wife.(19) His only child, Miriam Francis Xavier, married his nephew and partner STEPHEN MARTIN ASHLIN  STEPHEN MARTIN ASHLIN in 1904.

(3) See note 1, above; Jones transcribed Ashlin's account at Oscott,, which regularly includes extra charges for drawing and materials, and, in 1855, a single charge for 'Requisites for land measuring'.
(4) At the Dublin Exhibition of Fine and Ornamental Arts, 1861, the partners exhibited (no. 268): 'Seven perspective view of churches, etc., drawn by G.C. Ashlin, drawing of stained glass window (Cork)'; also 'Two drawings of proposed Augustinian church and monastery, cathedral church of St Thomas, Northampton, St Augustine's RC church, Dublin' (IALE I, 20).
(5) This information may be based on Alexandra Wedgwood, Catalogue of the Drawings Collection of the Royal Institute of British Architects: The Pugin Family (1977), 120. Wedgwood appears to infer the existence of the partnership from the fact that in 1879 'Pugin , Ashlin & Pugin' exhibited a bird's-eye view of the Pugin family home, The Grange, Ramsgate, at the Royal Academy, although on p.118 she states that this had been drawn by Cuthbert Pugin in 1873.
