Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Civil engineer, of Dublin and Wicklow.   George Leopold Johnston, who appears to have been the son of RICHARD JOHNSTON [3] RICHARD JOHNSTON [3] , was born in Dublin in 1862 or 1863 and studied engineering at Trinity College, receiving the BAI degree in 1885.(1)  By the following year he had been appointed architect to Rathdrum Union Board of Guardians with the responsibility for designing labourers' cottages at various locations in the union, including Glenealy, Newtownmountkennedy and Rathnew.(2)   He appears in the 1911 census as a married forty-eight-year-old 'C.E. and draughtsman', living as a boarder in Wicklow town.
