Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Builder and brickmaker, of Lurgan, Co. Armagh, active in the second half ot the nineteenth century and in the early years of the twentieth . According to his obituary in the Irish Builder,(1) Thomas Menary, who was born in Co. Down(2) in 1828 or 1829, was responsible for developing the Hill Street end of Lurgan, where he 'erected streets of dwellings of the artisan class…planned on modern lines', which 'added greatly to the comfort of the big working-class population of that town'. He died in 1921 at the age of ninety-two. He had married Jane Baillie in 1863,(3) but by the time of the 1911 census he was a widower.
