Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

'Brother' Johnston is named as the architect of the Gillespie monument in Comber, Co. Down, in the account of the public opening of the monument on 24 June 1845, which appeared in The Builder the following month.(1) According to this account members of 119 masonic lodges attended the ceremony, as General Gillespie had been a prominent mason. The account continues: '"Brother" Johnston, the architect, received much praise for the manner in which he had carried out the intention of the committee.' Almost thirty years later the Irish Builder attributes the design to the county surveyor, JOHN FRASER JOHN FRASER , 'having been chosen by his brother Masons in conjunction with Mr Walker, architect, to carry out the testimonial'.(2)
