Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Bricklayer and mason, of Elphin, Co. Roscommon, active in the 1740s, who 'built my Lord Bishop of Elphin's House and offices'.(1) The bishop refers to him in a letter to his daughter dated 13 May 1747: 'My Masons give me no trouble. There are but three at work, and they go on very well, tho' Byrne was drunk yesterday, and as great as a Prince.'(2) Byrne does not appear in the census of Elphin of 1749.
