- Born: 1877 Died: 1952
Architect and engineer, of Bangor, Co. Down, and Belfast. Ernest Lucius Woods, son of Hugh McCalmont Woods and Selina Letitia Woods, was born in Co. Antrim on 27 June 1877.(1) He was educated at the Methodist College, Belfast and articled for five years to JOSIAH CORBETT BRETLAND , city surveyor of Belfast. He was appointed town surveyor of Bangor in October 1899 and remained in the post until 1908, when he resigned.(2) He also practised privately as an architect and engineer in Belfast and Bangor. Several works are mentioned in the Irish Builder between 1908 and 1915, but there is a long gap between 1915 and 1929 followed by a fair amount of domestic and commercial work in the 1930s. Woods appears to have retired in about 1940, when he resigned from the RIAI.(3) He died on 29 March 1952.(4) According to the census of 1911, he had married circa 1906 and had at least two daughters.
