Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

English architect, for whom see Directory of British Architects 1834-1914 (RIBA 2001), II, 1050, and Gordon Biddle, 'Sancton Wood - Railway Architect', II, BackTrack 21, no. 11 (Nov 2007), 699(illus.), 698-700, for an account of his work in Ireland. In 1845 Sancton Wood won the competition for designing Kingsbridge Station in Dublin for the Great Southern & Western Railway Co.; his design was selected unanimously by the company's London committee, although the Dublin Committee had favoured the design of JOHN SKIPTON MULVANY. I JOHN SKIPTON MULVANY. I n the same year he was also appointed architect to the company. As such he designed the stations between Monasterevin and Limerick Junction, all of them - apart from Limerick Junction itself - in a gabled picturesque Gothic style.(1) He was also architect to the Irish South Eastern Railway, which developed a line from Carlow to Kilkenny in 1848-50.(2) His Irish work appears to have come to an end by 1856.
