WINTER, JOSEPH (OR JAMES) EDGAR *

Stone and wood carver, of Belfast, active from the 1890s until the 1920s or later. Born in Belfast on 8 September 1875, Winter, a son of one Robert Winter, was registered as Joseph Edgar Winter, yet his first name is frequently given as James. He became the leading architectural sculptor in Belfast, sometimes working on his own and sometimes with others: he was in partnership with an as yet unidentified sculptor named Thompson circa 1903-1905;(1)  a sculptor named Lockenden worked for the partnership at St Eugene's Cathedral, Derry, circa 1904.(2) 

Winter collaborated with FREDERICK WILLIAM POMEROY  FREDERICK WILLIAM POMEROY on the sculpture on the entrance front pediment of Belfast City Hall circa 1904. He also taught wood-carving at the Belfast Municipal Technical Institute(3) and, according to family tradition, supervised and carried out wood-carving in the Titanic. He died in Belfast on 22 July 1937 and was buried in the City Cemetery two days later.
