- Selected:
WILMOT, JOHN CHARLES
- Born: 1856ca Died: 1912
Architect and engineer, of Dublin. John Charles Wilmot, a son of Samuel George Wilmot, MD, sometime president and fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland, was, according to the English census of 1871, born in Monkstown, Co. Dublin, circa 1856. He was educated privately and at St Paul's College, Stony Stratford, in England. After serving his articles with THOMAS DREW , he worked briefly as a junior assistant in the office of WILLIAM SIDNEY COX under RICHARD O'BRIEN SMYTH . From 1882 to 1886 he practised in London and Windsor with PATRICK JAMES BYRNE as BYRNE & amp; WILMOT . He was the winner of a bronze medal at the International Health Exhibition held in London in 1884. In 1887 he set up his own practice in Dublin, which was chiefly engaged in domestic work. For thirteen years from 1891 he was an examiner in engineering and architecture for the Diploma of Public Health of the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland.
Wilmot died at his house in Galtrim Road, Bray, on 11 April 1912(1) after a short illness. He had married Annie Florence, younger daughter of J.R. Mallins, JP, of Dublin, but does not appear to have had any surviving children. His recreation was golf. At some stage he travelled in the United States. He briefly shared an office with HENRY WILMOT to whom he was presumably related.
