Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect of Bangor, Co. Down, and Belfast.   According to the 1911 census, William James Walshe was born in Belfast in 1862 or 1863.   At the time of the census he had been married for twelve years and had four children.   In 1905 he designed the layout for a proposed Garden Colony at Cliftonville Circus, Belfast, for the estate agent Sir ROBERT MCCONNELL ROBERT MCCONNELL . According to Brett, Walshe's layout 'provided for three open gardens; tree-lined roadways; a central pleasure-garden, with a tea-house, flag staff, and bandstand'.(1) Walshe designed other houses for R.J. McConnell & Co., including three in Cranmore Avenue in 1905 and a further villa at the corner of Cranmore Avenue and Lisburn Road. in 1915.(2) In 1917, he acted as honorary architect for eight semi-detached houses for disabled ex-servicemen, which were erected by the Belfast branch of the Auctioneers' and Estate Agents' Institute.(3)
