Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Derry city. Edward J. Toye, a son of Richard Toye, of Derry, was born in 1857 at Aghadowey, Co. Derry. He was educated at the Christian Brothers Schools in Derry and privately. From 1874 to 1877 he was articled to CHARLES EDWARD STEWART  CHARLES EDWARD STEWART of Derry and from 1877 until 1883 he served as an assistant to JOHN GUY FERGUSON  JOHN GUY FERGUSON . He set up in independent practice in Derry in 1885 and was in partnership with JAMES CROOM  JAMES CROOM from 1885 until circa 1889. His practice was a busy one in which work for the Catholic church predominated. Rowan points out that in his churches at Gortin, Ardara and Bruckless he made use of a distinctive wide plan, with the transepts separated from the nave by arcades which continue into the chancel to form a division between the chancel itself and the chapels on either side of it.(1) He also designed a number of branch premises for the Hibernian Bank. He died in November 1932(2) and was buried in the Catholic graveyard at Aghadowey.(3) He had married Catherine, daughter of William O'Hagan, of Crevagh, Co. Derry, in 1894, but had no children.  He was a member of Londonderry Corporation from 1897 until 1902.
