Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Civil engineer.  According to his 1911 census return, William Stuart was born in Co. Armagh in 1870 or 1871.   After taking an engineering degree, he worked in South Africa, where his two eldest children were born in the mid-1890s.  He had returned to Ireland by 1900 and was appointed borough surveyor for Strabane, Co. Tyrone, in or before1906, apparently holding the post until at least 1925.  At te time of the 1911 census he had been married for eighteen years to his wife, Elizabeth Watkins, a native of Co. Fermanagh, and had five sons and a daughter.
