Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Scottish architect, working in London, for whom see Howard Colvin, A Biographical dictionary of British architects 1600-1840 (4th edn., 2008), 982-3. Between 1779 and 1781 Steuart was employed by James Hamilton, eighth Earl of Abercorn, to design a house at Baronscourt, Co. Tyrone,.(1) The house was remodelled by JOHN SOANE  JOHN SOANE in 1790 and subsequently burnt out, to be reconstructed later by RICHARD MORRISON  RICHARD MORRISON and WILLIAM VITRUVIUS MORRISON. WILLIAM VITRUVIUS MORRISON.

Building: CO. TYRONE, BARONSCOURT
Date: 1779-1781
Nature: New 5-bay, 3-storey house for James Hamilton, 8th Earl of Abercorn, with 3-bay loggia of coupled Tuscan columns and shallow pediment. Cost: £8,015.8s.7½d.  'This new house is all of hewn white stone not very large but very convenient and well finished' (Beaufort).
