Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin, active from 1901 or earlier until 1909 or 1910. Charles Ramsey, son of Francis Mozart Ramsey, of Dublin, by his wife Jessie, née Carnegie, was born in 1884. He was actively involved in the affairs of the Architectural Association of Ireland between 1901 and 1907, winning the Association's Travelling Studentship in 1906 for a measured drawing of a building erected before 1820. These are almost certainly the drawings of Leinster House which were published in the Irish Builder in 1910.(1)

In 1907 Ramsey emigrated to the United States, where he taught architectural drafting at Louis Rouillion's Mechanics' Institute of New York. Rouillion and Ramsey published Architectural Details in 1924, the precursor of Ramsey and H.G. Sleeper's Architectural Graphic Standards (1932), which became a standard reference book for architects in the United States. He died in 1963.

AAI: elected member, 1901; wins first prize, Architectural History Class and special second prize AAI Travelling Studentship award, 1903;(2) hon. secretary of Architectural History Class, 1903-1904;(3) hon. secretary of Building Construction Class, 1904-1905;(4) wins travelling studentship (for measured drawing of a building erected by 1820 in Ireland), 1906;(5) wins Institute Prize for design for a hotel for a country town, 1907 (Assessor: GEORGE COPPINGER ASHLIN GEORGE COPPINGER ASHLIN );(6) no longer a member after 1909.
