Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer and architect, of Limerick. Joseph O'Malley, the youngest of the twelve children of Michael O'Malley, a farmer, and his wife Catherine (née Fleming), was born in Murroe, Co. Limerick, in 1867.(1) He graduated from Queen's College, Cork in 1890 with the degrees of BA and BE, and was an assistant county surveyor for Co. Limerick from 1900 or earlier until 1922 or later.(2) He had become engineer to the Limerick Board of Guardians by 1901(3) and was appointed engineer to Limerick No. 2 District Council on 19 December 1906.(4) In 1908 he was elected architect to Limerick District Lunatic Asylum.(5) In addition to holding these positions, he ran a private practice in Limerick, which, as reflected in the pages of the Irish Builder and the Irish Architect and Craftsman, appears to have been a busy one, dealing mainly in Catholic church, convent and domestic work in Limerick and the neighbouring counties of Clare, Cork, Kerry and Tipperary. He also designed 'a large number' of creameries.  From 1908-1910 he was in partnership with HORACE TENNYSON O'ROURKE HORACE TENNYSON O'ROURKE . His pupils and assistants included JOHN JOSEPH MURPHY JOHN JOSEPH MURPHY .

O'Malley died in Corbally, Co. Limerick, in 1933, leaving personal property worth £3,099 in England and the Irish Free State.(6)  In 1896 he had married Mary, daughter of Michael Egan, of Pery Square, Limerick, who died the following year after giving birth to a daughter. He subsequently married Mary Tooher and had nine children, the youngest of whom, Donogh, was Minister for Education in the late 1960s. He was the uncle of Desmond O'Malley, Minister for Justice from 1970 to 1973 and a founder member of the Progressive Democrat party.

Addresses: <=10 Glentworth Street, <=1896->=1929;(7) later Riverview, Mill Road, Corbally, Co. Limerick.
