Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Derry. Robert Hamilton McElwee was a son by the second marriage of WILLIAM MCELWEE[1]  WILLIAM MCELWEE[1] to Isabella Shaw. He was born some time between 1862, the date of his parents' marriage, and 1866, his father having died on 24 December 1865. R.H. McElwee & Co. are listed as architects in The Derry Almanac for 1899 with an address in Carlisle Road. His only work to be mentioned in the Irish Builder is a complex of two large shops, showrooms and stores on John Street, noted in March 1900.(1) In 1908 a Mr McElwee - either Robert McElwee or perhaps more probably his cousin WILLIAM MCELWEE[2]  WILLIAM MCELWEE[2] was appointed architect for the Derry police court.(1)
