Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. William Mansfield Mitchell, a son of George Mitchell, confectioner, of 10 Grafton Street, was born in Dublin on 7 August 1842. He was educated at the Wesleyan School, Dublin, and Nutgrove School, Rathfarnham. He served his pupilage in the office of DEANE SON & DEANE SON & amp; WOODWARD WOODWARD , with whom he remained until setting up in independent practice at 33 Dawson Street in 1867. In 1872, he entered into partnership with JOHN MCCURDY JOHN MCCURDY . The partnership probably lasted until 1882, when McCurdy appears to have decided to confine himself to his commitments as architect to Trinity College, Dublin. Mitchell practised on his own until the spring of 1905, when he took his two sons, CHARLES HOFFE MITCHELL CHARLES HOFFE MITCHELL , and JOHN MANSFIELD MITCHELL  JOHN MANSFIELD MITCHELL into partnership, practising as W.M. MITCHELL & MITCHELL & amp; SONS.(1)

Mitchell died of heart failure at the age of sixty-seven on 12 March 1910, the day before the death of his lifelong friend THOMAS DREW THOMAS DREW ,(2) and was buried at Mount Jerome Cemetery on 15 March.(3) He had married in 1868 Louisa, daughter of John Hoffe of Fareham, Hampshire, by whom he was the father of the two sons mentioned above and three daughters. By nature rather shy and retiring,(4) Mitchell's recreation was sketching in watercolours. He appears to have been exceptionally well-loved. Announcing the formation of his partnerhip with his sons in 1905, the Irish Builder noted that it was 'not an exaggeration to state that in all Ireland there is not a more personally popular member of the profession than Mr Mitchell'.(5) RUDOLF MAXIMILIAN BUTLER RUDOLF MAXIMILIAN BUTLER , in the obituary in the Irish Builder wrote of him: 'His extremely courteous manner and kindly disposition were such that it is safe to say he had not an enemy. Nor can it be said that during all his long career he was ever known to utter an unkind word of anybody.' These sentiments were also voiced by FREDERICK BATCHELOR  FREDERICK BATCHELOR when he addressed a meeting of the RIAI a few days after Mitchell's death: 'He was a man whom to know was to love. One of those rare Christian characters who neither speak or think evil of any man, it can truly be said of him that he had no enemies. Absolutely upright, fair and just in all his dealings, that knightly motto, 'Sans peur et sans reproche' might indeed have been his.'(6)

Mitchell was architect to the Board of the South Dublin Union(7) and in 1907 acted as assessor for a competition for houses in Kingstown for Kingstown Urban District Council.(8)  He was also architect to the Commissioners of Education in Ireland for the Regulation of the Royal Schools and certain other Endowed Schools.(9)  His pupils and assistants included WILLIAM GERATY CLAYTON WILLIAM GERATY CLAYTON , ROBERT DRAPER ROBERT DRAPER , FREDERICK HAYES FREDERICK HAYES , WILLIAM SAMPSON JERVOIS WILLIAM SAMPSON JERVOIS , HUBERT JOHN LUNDY HUBERT JOHN LUNDY , HORACE TENNYSON O'ROURKE  HORACE TENNYSON O'ROURKE and JAMES HENRY WEBB JAMES HENRY WEBB , who married his second daughter, Laura Gertrude.
