Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architectural partnership, of Dublin, formed by RICHARD CHAYTOR MILLAR  RICHARD CHAYTOR MILLAR and WILLIAM JOHN SYMES  WILLIAM JOHN SYMES in 1874. The partnership agreement, signed on 4 July 1874,(1) was originally for 10 years; on 4 July 1884 it was renewed for another ten years.(2) However William Symes died on 16 April 1892(3) before the ten years had run their course. After his death the practice retained the name of Millar & Symes although it was run by members of the Millar family only until it came to an end in the 1960s.

The Millar family was associated with the Bank of Ireland for three generations. When Sandham Symes, architect to the Bank from 1854, retired in 1879, over twenty-five candidates applied for the position, from amongst whom the partnership of Millar & Symes was chosen. The position was a part-time one which allowed the architects to continue private practice and carried an annual salary of £300 with a percentage on the cost of all new banks.(4) The salary was increased to £400 per annum in 1884 and to £500 per annum in 1892, when, following the death of Symes, the Bank requested that an assistant should be taken on 'to give more constant supervision to repairs and alterations at the branches'.(5).

Richard Chaytor Millar's son, ADAM GERALD CHAYTOR MILLAR  ADAM GERALD CHAYTOR MILLAR entered the office in 1898 and succeeded his father as architect to the Bank in 1907. The pressure of work for the Bank eventually became such such that he became a full-time member of the Bank's staff in 1926,(6) leaving his two sons RICHARD GERALD MILLAR  RICHARD GERALD MILLAR and HERBERT VIVIAN  HERBERT VIVIAN (Toby) MILLAR  MILLAR in charge of the practice of Millar & Symes. When he retired from the Bank in 1943 he was succeeded in turn by Toby Millar, who, although he was supposed to work only half-time, was more or less permanently employed on the Bank's business, while Richard Gerald Millar ran Millar & Symes. Richard Gerald Millar continued to run the practice after the deaths of his father and brother in 1958 until about 1966.

Pupils in the office of Millar & Symes included ROBERT EDWARD EVANS ROBERT EDWARD EVANS , LAMBERT WALTER MOYERS LAMBERT WALTER MOYERS , ALFRED AUGUSTINE MURPHY ALFRED AUGUSTINE MURPHY , CECIL ORR CECIL ORR , and George Fletcher Swettenham.

Addresses:(7) 197 Great Brunswick Street, 1874-1886; 186 Great Brunswick Street, 1886-1904; 60 Dawson Street, 1904(8)-1910; 39 Kildare Street, 1911-1945; 19 Kildare Street, 1946 onwards.
