Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. Adam Gerald Chaytor Millar, a son of RICHARD CHAYTOR MILLAR RICHARD CHAYTOR MILLAR , was born in Dublin in 1874 and attended Corrig School. Having entered into an apprenticeship with his father in 1891,(1) he became an engineering student at Trinity College, Dublin, gaining the BAI degree in 1895.(2) On completing his apprenticeship, he worked for two months in the office of RICHARD CAULFIELD ORPEN  RICHARD CAULFIELD ORPEN and a further eight months with CECIL ORR. CECIL ORR. (3)  He entered the practice of MILLAR & MILLAR & amp; SYMES  SYMES in January 1898(4) and in September 1907 succeeded his father as architect to the Bank of Ireland.(5) The pressure of work for the Bank was eventually so great that he became a full-time member of the Bank's staff with an office on the premises and a staff of three in 1926 or1927,(6) leaving his two sons RICHARD GERALD MILLAR  RICHARD GERALD MILLAR and HERBERT VIVIAN MILLAR  HERBERT VIVIAN MILLAR in charge of the practice of Millar & Symes. When he retired from the Bank in 1943, he was succeeded by his son Herbert Vivian (known as Toby). He resigned from the RIAI in 1956(7) and died at home on 18 November 1957. Toby Millar survived him for only a few months, but Richard Gerald Millar carried on the practice of Millar and Symes until the mid-1960s.

As a young man Millar was an active member of the Dublin Georgian Society. He was also a member of the AAI Sketching Club and the Dublin Water Colour Society.(8)

All information in this entry not otherwise accounted for is from the obituary of A.G.C. Millar in RIAI Year Book (1958), 34, and from information supplied by Mrs D. Millar, widow of Richard Gerald Millar, to Nicholas Sheaff and Alistair Rowan when they visited her in 1976. At that time Mrs Millar had a collection of drawings and other documents relating to the practice and to the Millar family which were subsequently dispersed. Nature: 'I have made several small alterations to the Head Ofice, the largest being the rebuilding of the Branch Banks & Secretary's department, the reconstruction of the Chief Cashier's house into offices, the conversion of the large library in Foster Place into a Staff lunchion room with its servery & kitchen offices.   A small job but of consederable inportace was reopening a doorway to Westmoreland Street which is a great convenience to the Public.'  Also opening up of vaults beneath bank, 1947..
