MAXWELL, WILLIAM CHARLES

Architect, of Belfast, active from the 1890s until the 1930s. William Charles Maxwell, only child of William Maxwell, secretary of the Belfast City Mission, and his wife Ruth McMillan (née Owens), was born in Belfast on 7 September 1875.(1) He was articled to JAMES JOHN PHILLIPS from 1891 to 1896, and attended the Belfast School of Art from 1891 to 1895. He remained with Phillips as an assistant until 1901 and then worked as an assistant in a number of different Belfast offices, with NICHOLAS FITZSIMONS from 1901 to 1905, with the Belfast Garden Estates Company from 1905 to 1906, with WILLIAM JOHN GILLILAND in 1907 and with Fitzsimons again from 1908 to 1909. He then established his own practice, which carried out a considerable amount of work for Presbyterian missions in Belfast. At the time of the 1911 census he was unmarried.
RIBA: elected associate 28 February 1910.(2)
RSUA:(3) member by 1937; still a member in 1938 but no longer listed in 1939.
