Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, and later of Southern and Northern Rhodesia. Sidney Davis Lavelle, who was born in England in 1892,(1) became a student of the RIAI in 1923.  In the same year he volunteered to join EDWARD CONOR MARSHALL O'BRIEN  EDWARD CONOR MARSHALL O'BRIEN who was setting out on his two-year round-the-world voyage on the ketch Saoirse, acting as ship's cook.(2)  He left the Saoirse at Durban, where he was offered a position with a big firm of architects.(3)  He remained in Africa for the rest of his life.

RIAI: elected student, 1923;(4) elected member, 13 June 1927;(5) ceased to be member, 1933;(6) admitted member, 1950;(7) raised to fellow, 1955.(8)
