Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. Vincent Kelly, who was born in 1895, was a native of Trim, Co. Meath, and attended the Trim Model School, from which he won a scholarship to St Finian's College, Mullingar. (1) He studied under WILLIAM ALPHONSUS SCOTT  WILLIAM ALPHONSUS SCOTT at the newly-established School of Architecture at University College, Dublin, from which, in 1917, he was the first student to graduate.(2) By 1922 he had set up in independent practice in Lower Abbey Street. In 1931 he was appointed one of the three members of  the Irish Hospital Committee of Reference set up to advise on the allocation of funds from the recently established Hospitals Trust Sweepstake, and in 1933 was sent by the committee to study recent hospital design in Europe. He left Ireland in February 1933 and during a six-week tour visited fifty-two new hospitals in Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, Holland, and Czechoslovakia.(3) Several local authority health boards - including those in Cos. Tipperary (North and South Ridings),Leitrim and Wicklow - chose him as architect for their proposed hospital improvement schemes, and in 1934 he was appointed consulting architect for Grangegorman mental hospital in Dublin. He also designed buildings for the Electricity Supply Board and for the New Ireland Assurance Co.(4) His pupils and assistants included DERMOT ST JOHN GOGARTY DERMOT ST JOHN GOGARTY , THOMAS FRANCIS INGLIS THOMAS FRANCIS INGLIS , FREDERICK M FREDERICK M acMANUS, Brendan O'Connor, JAMES MAUDE RICHARDS JAMES MAUDE RICHARDS , future editor of the Architectural Review, JAMES STANISLAUS JOSEPH WALL  JAMES STANISLAUS JOSEPH WALL and JOHN HENRY WATSON JOHN HENRY WATSON . Richards recalled him as he was in 1931: 'he was one of the most successful Dublin architects; not an outstanding designer - he would not have claimed to be so - but a good business man, a practical man who got on well with his colleagues and a man with well-established contacts in ecclesiastical and government circles. These served him well when the torrent of unlooked-for money descended on the hospitals.'(5) Kelly died in 1975, survived by his wife.

The Irish Architectural Archive holds three undated hospital designs by Kelly (Acc. 2001/165): a plan of the Co. Kildare Fever Hospital at Naas, a competition design for the Co. Louth Mental Hospital at Ardee, and a bird's-eye view of an unidentified tuberculosis hospital. It also holds a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings compiled by Kelly between May 1931 and January 1945 (Acc. 2009/100).
