Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architectural partnership, of Dublin, formed between ALFRED EDWIN JONES  ALFRED EDWIN JONES and STEPHEN STANISLAUS KELLY  STEPHEN STANISLAUS KELLY in 1919. The following year they won the competition for Ballymena Town Hall, and in 1923 gained wider recognition as the winning entrants in the Cork City Hall competition. The partnership lasted until Kelly's death in 1951, though Kelly became too ill to work after 1949. After Kelly's death Alfred Jones took his son Felix Alfred Jones and his elder daughter, Elizabeth Fleming, into partnership. Felix and Elizabeth Jones carried on the practice after their father's death, and later Felix Jones's son, another Alfred E. Jones, became a partner in the practice. The firm has continued under the name of Jones & Kelly until the present day (1998).

Alfred Jones & Stephen Kelly had a large and varied practice. Their work was primarily ecclesiastical and educational but also included public housing, cinemas, theatres, commercial and industrial buildings. They carried on the traditional apprenticeship system until the 1940s, and well over a hundred pupils were indentured to the firm in the period up to and including the Second World War. Their pupils and assistants included TIMOTHY JOSEPH AHERN TIMOTHY JOSEPH AHERN , BASIL BOYD BARRETT BASIL BOYD BARRETT , RUPERT BOYD BARRETT RUPERT BOYD BARRETT , Jackie Collins, JOHN PETER BUTLER JOHN PETER BUTLER , Vincent Gallagher, Patrick F. McDonnell, DERMOT O'DWYER DERMOT O'DWYER , DONAL O'DWYER  DONAL O'DWYER and MICHAEL SCOTT MICHAEL SCOTT . Scott recalled that when he was with them - from 1923 to 1926 - 'they had very fixed ideas that anything that wasn't Gothic or Renaissance or Romanesque was no bloody good. Anything! So we were forced to keep inside this very extraordinary framework of architecture which was completely out of date and which had nothing to do with our time.'(1)

The Irish Architectural Archive holds an undated drawing by Jones & Kelly for an addition to the convent of Mercy, Monasterevin, in the Carberry Collection, Acc. 85/200.15/1.

Addresses: Morrow's Chambers, 17 South Frederick Street, <=1921->=1961; 36 Waterloo Road, <=1963->=1973.
