Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Cork. James Rupert Boyd Barrett, son of James Charles Boyd Barrett, an electrical engineer, and an elder brother of BASIL BOYD BARRETT BASIL BOYD BARRETT (q.v.), was born in Loughborough, England. His mother, Mary Josephine, was a daughter of JOHN LOFTUS ROBINSON  JOHN LOFTUS ROBINSON and a sister of JOHN JOSEPH ROBINSON JOHN JOSEPH ROBINSON . He was educated at Clongowes Wood College and at the Christian Brothers School, North Richmond Street, Dublin. He became a pupil in the office of JONES & JONES & amp; KELLY  KELLY and pursued his professional education at the Dublin School of Art and at University College, London. In 1928, at the age of twenty-four, he set up in private practice in Cork, where he remained until his death. During nearly half a century in practice, he designed many major buildings throughout the country, including the Department of Industry and Commerce in Kildare Street, Dublin, four new churches in Cork and ten new churches in the Diocese of Kerry. In 1963 the Knighthood of the Order of St Sylvester was conferred upon him by  Pope John XXIII  XXIII for his services to ecclesiastical architecture.(2)  The honour carried the title 'Chevalier'.

Barrett died on 1 November 1976 at the Bon Secours Home, Cork, and was buried at St Finbarr's Cemetery.(3) He had married on 26 September 1928 Mary O'Callaghan but had no children.(4) The firm of Boyd Barrett, Murphy O'Connor is still (2020) in practice at 5 Camden Place, Cork.

Barrett's pupils and assistants included Mary Fitzgibbon.

The Irish Architectural Archive holds a large collection of drawings from Boyd Barrett's office dating from the 1920s onwards (Acc. 95/148) and his specifications for the Department of Industry and Commerce, Kildare Street (Acc. 2005/50).
