BARRETT, BASIL RAYMOND BOYD

Architect, of Dublin. Basil Boyd Barrett, brother of JAMES RUPERT BOYD BARRETT , was born in Dublin on 19 September 1908, the son of James Charles Boyd Barrett, an electrical engineer. His mother, Mary Josephine, was a daughter of JOHN LOFTUS ROBINSON and a sister of JOHN JOSEPH ROBINSON. (1) Basil Boyd Barrett was educated in Dublin. In 1925 he became an apprentice in the office of JONES & amp; KELLY . He was an extern student at the School of Architecture at University College, Dublin, for two years, and attended the School of Art for four years. After working in the office of CHARLES DUNLOP , he was appointed an assistant architect in the Office of Public Works circa 1934. The rest of his career was spent with the Office of Public Works, where his particular interest was school design. In 1947 he was appointed chief schools architect. His design for a new prototype school was exhibited in 1963.(2) In May 1968 he was promoted to deputy principal architect. He died the following year, on 10 October 1969, and was buried at Glasnevin Cemetery.(3) He left an estate of £40,321.(4) He had married Mary Josephine McMahon on 3 September 1937 but had no children.(5)
