)IB 43, 3 Jul 1902, 1314. The Town Commissioners decided to build a New Town Hall in 1898. The then Parish Priest, Rev. Canon Murphy was asked to approach Lady Ardilaun to enquire her approval for the building on her land – the site of the Old Market House in the town square. An engineer, Mr. A.W. Barnard was in charge of the project and the plans were then given to Lady Ardilaun.A request was made to the Local Board of Guardians for a loan of £1,000 towards the project. It was approved in 1902 with the condition that all local workers were to be used to build it. The contract was eventually awarded to Buckley Bros., Ovens for £1,320. (1
