Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

English architect, inventor of the Hansom cab and founder of The Builder, for whom see Directory of British Architects 1834-1914 (RIBA 2001), I, 834-5. Joseph Aloysius Hansom was the elder brother of CHARLES FRANCIS HANSOM CHARLES FRANCIS HANSOM , with whom he was in partnership when designed the convent and catholic church at Kenmare, Co. Kerry.(1)   With his son Joseph Stanislaus Hansom he designed the Catholic church at Newtownards, Co. Down (1875-77).(2) The architect DANIEL O'CONNELL DANIEL O'CONNELL , grandson of the Liberator, was his pupil in the 1850s.(3)

Nature: Convent & schools in mixture of Gothic and Elizabethan styles said to have been designed while JAH was in partnership with Charles Frances Hansom but completed by latter after dissolution of partnership in 1859.  Bath stone. For Archdeacon John O'Sullivan. Builder: Denis W. Murphy, Bantry.

Nature: New church, built at expense of Dowager Marchioness of Londonderry. Archt: Joseph A. Hansom & Son'. Clerk of works: Thomas Stokes. Builder: Robert Corry.
