Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Civil engineer. Thomas Andrew Hall was born on 27 October 1867 and from 1885 until 1888 attended lectures at the School of Engineering at Queen's College, Galway. During these three years he also acted as assistant to the Professor of Engineering, EDWARD TOWNSEND EDWARD TOWNSEND , with whom he was associated in various projects until 1897. On graduating BE in July 1888, he was engaged in fieldwork for the scheme of a convict prison to supply labour for the breakwater to Mutton Island in Galway Harbour.(1) Between 1889 and 1896 he was engaged in railway work in Co. Galway, principally on the Galway & Clifden Railway under Townsend and JOHN HENRY RYAN JOHN HENRY RYAN . From 1896 to 1897 he surveyed and designed an extensive water supply scheme for Galway City. In 1897 he became chief assistant to J.Y.F. Cooke, Engineer of the Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway, and from 1898 to 1899 he carried out work on various railway projects in England. On Cooke's retirement in 1899, Hall returned to Ireland to take sole charge of the Carndonagh extension of the Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway. He was appointed chief engineer to the company in 1902. During his years with the company he also designed the main drainage scheme for Buncrana.

In 1906 Hall was appointed Government Engineer to the Colony of Newfoundland at a salary of £650 per annum.(2) He remained in Newfoundland until his death on 21 June 1944, having been awarded the CBE in the year of his death. His career in Newfoundland falls outside the scope of this database.
