Architect, of Coleraine, Co. Derry. William Given, who, according to the 1911 census, was born in Co. Derry in 1850 or 1851, was surveyor to the Mercers' Company's estates in Kilrea, Co. Derry, and an assistant county surveyor for Co. Derry before his appointment as town surveyor for Coleraine circa 1885. He appears in the Derry Almanac as an architect and civil engineer with an address at New Row, Coleraine, in 1891. By the following year he had moved to the Diamond, Coleraine, and had established the architectural partnership of W. & M. GIVEN - GIVEN - also referred to as W.J. & M. Given - with his brother MAXWELL GIVEN MAXWELL GIVEN . Given continued in the post of town surveyor for Coleraine until his death, which took place at his home in Coleraine on 3 December 1923. A widower for many years, he had at least one son and one daughter. The firm of W. & J. Given, carried on by Maxwell Given until his own death in 1934, continued to operate until at least the 1970s.
