Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Clerk of works for the erection of Downpatrick Cathedral, Co. Down, employed in 1790 'to carry on the entire works of the Cathedral' at a salary of £50 per annum. Payments of his salary ceased in August 1791, although he continued to supervise work on the cathedral until late in 1792, when he found he could no longer offord to support the stone-cutters. At this point the first Marquess of Downshire requested him to proceed with the east window, assuring him that he would be honourably paid. The marquess died soon afterwards, however, and Gamble received no further payments, with the result that in 1795 he brought an action against the Dean of Downpatrick for recovery of the money due to him.(1)
