BALLANTINE, ALEXANDER *
- Born: - Died: -
Proprietor of a stone, marble and chimneypiece warehouse in Dorset St Upper, Dublin, from the 1840s until the 1870s. Pettigrew & Oulton's Dublin Almnac for 1841 and the Post Office Dublin Directory for 1844 list Mssrs Ballantine & Kirwan, stone, marble and chimneypiece warerooms, at 125 Dorset St Upper, but in Pettigrew & Oulton's Directory for 1847 the name and address of the business are given as Alexander Ballantine, 126 Dorset Street Upper. Ballantine's address remained the same until at least 1858, and by 1857 a residence at Santry is also listed. By 1862 the business had expanded to include 139 Dorset Street Upper; this is given as the sole address in the 1874 and 1875 directories, by which time Ballantine had moved his residence to 1 Fairfield Terrace, Dundrum. He has disappeared from the directories by 1883. See also ROBERT BALLANTINE [1].
There were several other Ballantines engaged in the stonecutting and marble trades in Dublin in the nineteenth century. These include ROBERT BALLANTINE , senior and junior, DUNCAN BALLANTYNE , and Archibald Ballantine of 96 Dorset Street Lower, listed in the directories for 1874 and 1875.
