Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Surveyor of buildings in the Board of Works. Frederick Franklin was born on 18 April 1828.(1) He was with the Poor Law Board from 19 November 1849 until 31 December 1856,(2) a clerk of works with the Board of Works from 1 November 1858 until 31 March 1862, and a surveyor of buildings from 1 April 1862.(3) He retired in 1888 or 1893,(4) when he was succeeded by THOMAS JOHN MELLON THOMAS JOHN MELLON . He died on 24 January 1905 and was buried in Mount Jerome cemetery.(5)  In the obituary which appeared in the Irish Builder, he is described as 'a kindly, pleasant, courteous old gentleman…who up to the last almost took a keen interest in the doings of the profession from the active practice of which he had retired…a strong supporter of the Institute of Architects and a regular attendant at its meetings'.(6)
