Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, perhaps of Dublin. William Barber was apparently in the Debtors' Prison in Dublin in July 1801.(1) His Farm buildings; or rural economy. Containing designs for cottages, farm-houses, lodges, farm-yards, &c. &c…dedicated by permission to the Farming Society of Ireland. Also a description of the mode of building in pisé was published by himself in Dublin in 1802;(2) another edition was published in London by J. Harding in 1805 or later.(3)

(1) According to Maurice Craig, the late Walter Armytage had an copy of Barber's book in which were inserted a number of original drawings and a prospectus by R. Gibson, 14 Anglesea St, Dublin, in which Barber writes from the Debtors' Prison, Dublin, 7 Jul 1801.
(2) The catalogue of the RIBA Library lists a London printing of 1802.
(3) Priscilla Wrightson, The small English house (B. Weinreb Architectural Books, Catalogue No. 35, 1977), 19 (nos. 105,106); the London edition is on paper watermarked 1805.
