Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and district inspector for the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, based in Armagh. William Turney Fullerton, son of John Johnston Fullerton, a Dublin attorney and and his wife Frances, née Chamney, was born or baptised in St Andrew's parish, Dublin, on 3 February 1805. Nothing is known of his architectural training or early career; he may have worked from the start for the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. He appears in the Belfast and Province of Ulster Directory for 1852 as an architect practising from Palace Row, Armagh. He is described as 'diocesan architect' in a note on repairs to Knockbreda church in the Diocese of Down in 1856.(1) He died on 12 February 1867, and was succeeded in the position by JAMES WILLIAM MARTIN. JAMES WILLIAM MARTIN. (2) He had married Jane, daughter of Henry Carpenter, at Coolock, near Dublin, in 1843 and was the father of JOHN HENRY FULLERTON  JOHN HENRY FULLERTON and possibly also of WILLIAM FULLERTON.  WILLIAM FULLERTON.

Nature: Alterations to church of 1746  consisting of extension of nave, new chancel, new paired lancet windows. Given to WF by Rowan on basis of note on drawing: 'Walls about 18 ft high to beam says Mr Fullerton', but could nevertheless be by Joseph Welland.

Building: CO. DOWN, ANNAHILT, CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION (CI)
Date: 1856
Nature: New church, consecrated 29 Jul 1856. Attr. to WF by J.F. Rankin, on grounds that Deed of Consecration says that  WF condemned the old church, deducing from this that he can be assumed to have designed the new one;  however as local architect to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, he may have been the executant architect rather than the designer of the church.  See Joseph Welland.

Building: CO. ARMAGH, MULLADRY (PORTADOWN), CHURCH OF ST SAVIOUR (CI)
Date: 1856-58
Nature: New church for new district curacy in parish of Kilmore, 'built at the sole expense of Miss Isabella Richardson, of Richill'.  Foundation stone laid, 7 Jun 1856; consecrated 9 Apr 1858. Contractor: Richard Cherry, Loughgall. 'Local tradition states that the architect was a Mr Fulton[sic] who came out frequently from Armagh whilst the work was in progress...' (Brett).
