Robert Stephenson Barnes, a son of ROBERT STEPHENSON BARNES [1] ROBERT STEPHENSON BARNES [1] , was born circa 1871 and educated at Bristol Grammar School, in Navan and at Trinity College Dublin. He left Trinity before taking the BAI degree on account of having to undergo surgery for cataracts in his eyes. He became a pupil of his father and subsequently worked in his office. In 1891 he was appointed an assistant county surveyor for Co. Meath. He was placed on the panel of architects approved by the joint committee of the Local Government Board for employment by Public Bodies for the preparation of plans for housing schemes. He was appointed town surveyor to Navan Urban Council in 1899 and was also architect and engineer to Navan Rural District Council. In 1900 he prepared plans for housing schemes for both bodies and had charge of five hundred houses and their maintenance. He was responsible for five drainage districts and the Navan water works. His private commissions consisted of houses, business premises, mills, bakeries, an extension to the Navan show ground, race-course and stands, and water supply schemes for a number of country houses.
