Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

County surveyor for Cos. Longford, 1915-1920, and Kerry, 1920-1943. Valentine Doyle, a son of J.J. Doyle, from Beaufort, Co. Kerry, a pioneer of the Gaelic League,(1) was born, probably in Scotland, where his father was a customs official, on 14 February 1888, educated at St Columb's College, Derry, and the Derry Technical Schools, and studied engineering at Queen's College, Galway, obtaining the BE degree of the Royal University and the ME degree of the National University. During 1908-9 he served a six-month pupilage with the WILLIAM JAMES ROBINSON WILLIAM JAMES ROBINSON , borough surveyor of Derry, and then spent nine months as assistant to CHRISTOPHER JOHN MULVANY CHRISTOPHER JOHN MULVANY , county surveyor for Co. Roscommon. In 1910 he was appointed town surveyor of Athlone in succession to HARRY JACKSON CROSSLEY HARRY JACKSON CROSSLEY . He resigned in July 1915 on his appointment as county surveyor for Co. Longford.(2) He remained in Co. Longford for five years. In September 1920 he was appointed county surveyor for the northern district of Co. Kerry, based in Tralee.(3) In 1939, following the death of he became responsible for the whole county of Kerry.(4) He retired into private practice for reasons of health in 1943(5) and died in Tralee in 1958.(6) He was survived by his wife, Lily, two sons and a daughter.(7)
