Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Carpenter and timber merchant, of Dublin, active from the 1740s to the 1760s. John Chambers was employed as a carpenter at the Four Courts in 1749(1) and may be the Chambers of 'Chambers & Ball', one of several contractors invited to submit proposals for the rebuilding of St Werburgh's church, Dublin, after it had been gutted by fire in November 1754.(2) He was employed in the repair of the Dublin Barracks in 1759-1760(3) and built 13 Merrion Square North in 1764.(4) He was one of the three representatives of the Guild of Carpenters on the Common Council of Dublin in 1753-56(5) and was a subscriber to JOHN AHERON' JOHN AHERON' s A general treatise on architecture, published in Dublin in 1754.

The will of a timber merchant of the same name - perhaps his son - was proved in the Prerogative Court in 1793.(6)
