Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Civil engineer, of Tralee, Co. Kerry. Robert Denny, the fifth son of the Rev. Henry Denny, rector of Churchill, Co. Kerry, was born on 5 June 1843. In 1862, after attending Beaumont College, Cork, he was articled for three years to WILLIAM RICHARD LE FANU WILLIAM RICHARD LE FANU , who employed him as his assistant on part of the Nenagh extension of the Great Southern and Western Railway. After Le Fanu's retirement Denny continued in the same position under CHARLES PHILIP COTTON  CHARLES PHILIP COTTON and BENJAMIN FERGUSON FLEMYNG BENJAMIN FERGUSON FLEMYNG . He next worked with J.C. Burke of Westminster before setting up in independent practice in Tralee in 1870. From this date until shortly before his death, he was involved in all the principal engineering projects in Kerry. He died on 25 July 1888. 'His genial and sociable manner caused him to be a universal favourite,' according to his obituarist in the Minutes and Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, 'while his attention to business and his integrity gained him the respect and esteem of his professional brethren.'
