Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Civil engineer. Bernard Darley, a son of John Henry Darley of Dublin, and his wife Mary Cerise (née Lees), was born on 24 August 1880. He attended Trinity College, Dublin, and Cooper's Hill Engineering College before going out to India where he was assistant engineer in the United Provinces, 1903-9, and Executive Engineer, 1909-19. From 1919 until 1931 he was chief engineer to the Sarda Canal irrigation project, on the opening of which in 1928 he was awarded a knighthood. From 1932 until his retirement in 1937 he was chief engineer of Bahawalpur State, Punjab. He died on 11 August 1953. By his first wife, Amy Heathcote Arculus, whom he married on 5 November 1808, he had two sons and two daughters.
