Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Carpenter and builder, of Great Brunswick Street, Dublin. Daniel Crowe was born in 1782 and had established himself as a carpenter and builder at 17 Great Brunswick Street, Dublin, by 1832.(1) He had five sons who were all admitted to the Royal Dublin Society's School of Drawing in Architecture:(2) William (1811-1868) in 1825, MICHAEL FREDERICK  MICHAEL FREDERICK (1815-1902) and George(3) in 1830, Edward in 1833 and Henry in 1842. Some or all of them joined him in the family firm. He appears in the directories as 'Daniel Crowe & Sons' from 1833 onwards. He died at 53 Great Brunswick Street on 31 March 1859 and was buried on 4 April following. The business was carried on by his sons for a few years after his death, probably until the death of William Crowe in 1868. In Thom's directory for 1863 'Daniel Crowe & Sons' appear at Nos. 53 and 54 Great Brunswick Street and 'Crowe Brothers' at No. 55. All references to the firm in the Irish Builder cease by 1870, and by 1874 the premises at 52-55 Great Brunswick Street were occupied by other builders.

(1) There are no Crowes in the list of Freemen of the City of Dublin admitted between 1774 and 1824, which suggests that he may have come from elsewhere.
(2) MS. transcript from Royal Dublin Society minutes of School of Drawing in Architecture admissions and prizewinners (in IAA).
(3) George Crowe is described as a builder on the certificate which records his marriage to Adelaide Elizabeth Morton in Donnybrook parish church on 9 Jun 1863 (photocopy of certificate in IAA, Jones file C160A).
