Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. William Geraty Clayton, second son of WILLIAM JAMES CLAYTON  WILLIAM JAMES CLAYTON and his wife Ida Mary (née Lee), was born in Dublin on 25 September 1872.(1)  His father's teacher and friend, WILLIAM GERATY WILLIAM GERATY , was his godfather.  After serving his pupillage in the office of WILLIAM MANSFIELD MITCHELL WILLIAM MANSFIELD MITCHELL ,(2) he worked in the office of WILLIAM HENRY BYRNE & WILLIAM HENRY BYRNE & amp; SON for fifteen years before setting up in practice on his own.(3) In 1917 with WILLIAM SEDGWICK KEATINGE  WILLIAM SEDGWICK KEATINGE he won the competition for designing premises for the National University of Ireland in Upper Mount Street, Dublin.(4)    The following year, apparently because of fears for his eyesight and a falling away of business after the First World War, he gave up architecture and bought a farm at Kilteel, Co. Kildare.  

William Geraty Clayton died in 1946. He had married Gertrude Mary (neé O'Connor) on 29 September 1914 and had five children, Dermot Thomas (1915-1932), Mary Ida (b. 1919), Helen Gertrude (b. 1921), Jessie (b. 1923) and Dorothy (1919-1998).(5)

RIAI: proposed for membership 7 October 1895 by William Mansfield Mitchell, seconded by ALBERT EDWARD MURRAY  ALBERT EDWARD MURRAY and JAMES RAWSON CARROLL JAMES RAWSON CARROLL ;(6) elected 2 December 1895;(7) resigned during session 1919-1920.(8)
