Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Church decorator, of Dublin. Joshua Clarke, who was born in England circa 1868, came to Dublin in his youth as a salesman for an ecclesiastical suppliers after the collapse of the family printing business in Leeds.(1) By 1886 he had set up his own business as a church decorator at 33 North Frederick Street and had married Brigid MacGonigal from Cliffoney, Co. Sligo. In 1892 he was able to employ an English stained-glass draughtsman named Pope, and the business was eventually to become entirely dedicated to the production of stained glass. Clarke owned the business until the summer of 1921 when it became a limited company and the premises were made over to his elder son, WALTER CLARKE WALTER CLARKE . He died of peritonitis on 13 September 1921, aged fifty-three. After his death the business was managed by his sons Walter and HARRY CLARKE HARRY CLARKE . In January 1931 the decorating side of the Clarke Studios was terminated, and the company was renamed the Harry Clarke Stained Glass Studios Ltd.
